2 Thessalonians 2:1-5
1 As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, 2 not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way, for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. 4 He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. 5 Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you?
“… 1 As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him …”
It’s easy to get caught up in the predictions of Christ’s coming. Throughout history, priests, prophets, and leaders have attempted to discern the day of the Lord. Typically, it centers around some cosmic or geological event such as a comet or volcanic eruption. In our own day, there are many who claim to know the exact date and time.
Paul warned the Thessalonians then and us today not to be taken in by such prognostication. Instead, he advises, hold fast to the promise of Jesus’ coming by living each day to the Lord. Rather than trying to adjust your life and world in preparation, make every day one in which you praise and glorify the Lord in your words and through your deeds.
After all, that is what the Lord seeks. Living in the world and living to the Lord is the way of faith. Seeking to escape to some isolated island with a group of those expecting the end is not the way Jesus’ would have us go. Instead, live today serving and loving others. Care for your neighbor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, share your love with others, and trust in God’s presence in your life. In this way, whenever Jesus Christ chooses to return, you will be ready.
Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus. Teach me to live each day to You. Show me how to serve and love others as You love and serve me. Amen.
