Malachi 4:1-2a

1 See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2a But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings.

“… 1 See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; …”

What’s one to do about Malachi. His words conjure up images of God’s retribution upon unbelievers and scoffers. Often used to scare people into claiming a faith they did not have, the prophet’s words became manipulative in the hands of abusers whose only goal was “saving souls.”

In reality, it was less about faith and more about action. Notice the words “arrogant” and “evildoers”. What Malachi proclaims is a message about religious apathy, misuse of God’s name for one’s own benefit, and injustice toward the poor. Rather than retribution, Malachi serves as a call to reclaim the gifts of God – zealousness for the Word, faithful worship of God, serving the Lord rather than self, and caring for the poor and needy.

In today’s world, Malachi’s call is clarion. Rather than seeking self, the prophet’s command is to seek the Lord by being attentive and directed by God’s Word. It is a directive toward regular worship in the midst of a community. It demands from us servanthood – not to self but to others. And clearly, serving the cause of justice, especially for the less fortunate, is vital.

Rather than retribution, the prophet is calling God’s people to turn from their arrogant and evil ways and embrace the promise and call of the Lord. That’s why his words were so important then, and so critical for life in the world today.

Prayer: Almighty God, you call us live according to Your will and way. Lead me this day in the way of service to others rather than self, and holy worship and praise of You now and always. Amen.
