Psalm 89:1-4
1 I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever;
with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
2 I declare that your steadfast love is established forever;
your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
I have sworn to my servant David:
4 ‘I will establish your descendants forever
and build your throne for all generations.’ ”
“… 1 I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; …”
When I’m out for my daily walk, I often find myself singing to myself. Typically, it’s when I’ve experienced the beauty of Creation such as the rippling water flowing over the stones in Rock Creek or the trees gently swaying to the cool breeze in Hedges-Boyer Park. It seems like the power of God’s wonders cause an eruption in song and singing.
Singing is one of the universal means of praising God. When I was in Liberia, while I didn’t understand the words, the voices lifted to the beat of drums and tambourines gave glory to God. Atop the butte in Sky City, New Mexico, the language of the Acoma was unfamiliar, but the power of praise was evident in the chants.
Wherever God’s people come together to give praise and glory to God, singing inevitably is included. Raised voices echo the angelic host as they honor the Holy One. Melodies rise like incense to the One who created heaven and earth. Harmonies blend with cosmic sounds in adoration of the One who gives life to us and all the world. Throughout the ages and all eternity, God’s people sing of God’s steadfast love.
Prayer: Lord, you alone are worthy of our honor and glory. Join my voice to the great communion of saints who forever sing Your praise and bless You for Your steadfast love.
