Psalm 78:1-7

 1 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
3 things that we have heard and known,
that our ancestors have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children;
we will tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord and his might
and the wonders that he has done.
5 He established a decree in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach to their children,
6 that the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and rise up and tell them to their children,
  7 so that they should set their hope in God,
and not forget the works of God,
but keep his commandments;

6 …that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and rise up and tell them to their children…

Once a month, I spend an afternoon working at Pass It On clothing ministry.  I always have a wonderful time visiting with folks and helping everyone find something to wear that makes them feel special.

This week, a young family came in for the first time.  After Mom, and the two little ones, went out to the car, Dad asked for a volunteer form for himself and his teenage daughter.  He told us that it’s very important to their family that each of the children learns to give something back to their community.  They were both excited about coming back to volunteer as soon as they can.

Psalm 78 reminds us that we are commanded by God to teach our children God’s Word so that they can live righteous lives and pass those teachings on to their own children.  As Christians, we believe that extends to following the example and teachings of Jesus as well.

Prayer:  Lord God:  Thank you for the blessing of modeling faithful living for our children.  May they be a blessing to their children in the same ways.  AMEN
