Hebrews 13:7-8, 15-16
7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 15 Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
“… 7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you …”
“David Westphal. Please report to the principal’s office immediately!”
The announcement that came over the PA system at the Williamsport Area High School sent a shiver up my spine. I knew that whatever was coming my way would not be pleasant; and it wasn’t. I was being sent home to shave off the mustache I’d grown during the Thanksgiving holiday. Facial hair was not accepted in those days!
“Pastor Dave. You can come in now!”
With the previous painful experience of being called into the principal’s office a distance yet somehow fresh memory, having been “summoned” to the office of the bishop was a bit unnerving. I anticipated the worst. What I received was the best.
“I’ve heard some good things about you,” the conversation began. He proceeded to offer several accolades about my ministry for which I could only thank whoever spoke well of me. Then, he turned to me and said, “But, I think it would be helpful if you…”
And the list began. Not of failings or reprimand but of Spirit-inspired suggestions on how I might make a greater impact in the parish, how I might be a more faithful pastor, and how I might be a more loving husband and father. More than simply suggestions, the bishop’s counsel encouraged and enabled me to be better. I always appreciated the advice he shared with me that day.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us to heed the counsel and advice offered by those who have our best interests and the interests of Christ and His Church in mind. While not always appreciated at the time, over time, those comments can lead us in new and more faithful directions.
Prayer: Lord, you have placed in our lives those who offer counsel that we might serve You, Your Church, and Your people more faithfully. Give me ears to hear Your Word from their lips. Amen.
