Isaiah 50:4-6
4 The Lord God has given me
the tongue of a teacher,
that I may know how to sustain
the weary with a word.
Morning by morning he wakens—
wakens my ear
to listen as those who are taught.
5 The Lord God has opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious,
I did not turn backward.
6 I gave my back to those who struck me,
and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;
I did not hide my face
from insult and spitting.
“… 4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher,
that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. …”
One of the privileges I share with clergy of every faith is the opportunity to be with folks during some of the darkest days of their lives. From funeral parlors to hospital beds, counseling centers to accident scenes, men and women “of the cloth” journey with individuals, families, congregations, and whole communities during crises, trauma, difficulty, and tragedy.
During those times when I am called or sent into such situations, I am humbled by the power of the Holy Spirit to give me words to speak and silence to keep. Being able to say something that offers comfort, consolation, support, or nurture is a true gift of God’s grace. I recognize that it is not me who’s the author but the Spirit. It is my mouth but the Lord’s words.
At other times, the Spirit’s presence is offered in the communal silence of grace, hope, and promise. Rather than words, the Lord gives patience, attentiveness, and presence. It is the awesome stillness which often elicits strength and peace. Again, rather than credit self, it is the Spirit who is active in those situations.
The psalmist understands that the Lord is the author and authority in such times. We who are sent, whether clergy or laity, are only instruments of God’s loving care and compassion. Trusting in the promise of God to be there with you and them is the key.
Prayer: Lord, You are present everywhere and at every time. Teach me to trust in Your promise to be with me when I am called to offer a word to the weary or stillness and patience that others may know that You are with them too. Amen.
