1 Corinthians 1:1-9
1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5 for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind 6 just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the partnership of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
“… God is faithful …”
In a world filled with promises, commitments, and vows of all kinds that are systematically and intentionally broken, it is good to know there is One who is faithful. The promises of God are sure. Where else can you find this?
Certainly, we all have friends, neighbors, family, and colleagues who make and follow through on commitments. It may be as simple as promising to attend a child’s birthday party or as dedicated as the vows of marriage. Yet, time and time again, for reasons too numerous to outline here, those assurances are broken, making all of us just a little more hesitant to trust the next one.
That is why it is so important to hear what Paul writes about God. God’s faithfulness is who God is. God keeps God’s promises. God honors the commitments made by God. God’s assurances are definitive. Knowing that, keeps us grounded in the Lord, engendering trust in God’s Word, and allowing us to live in surety.
Paul reminds us that God is faithful. In a world filled with broken commitments, false assurances, and untrue promises, it is upon that faithfulness of God that our lives are built.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for Your everlasting faithfulness. When the world causes me to doubt and second-guess commitments, remind me that Your promises and commitments are always sure. Amen.
