Hebrews 12:1-3
1 Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.
“… 3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. …”
It is so easy to lose heart these days, especially with the chaos in the marketplace, the seemingly random acts of violence in this country and abroad, the lack of compassion and care for the neediest among us, and deep political and partisan divisions that are tearing our country and world apart. Were it not for the impending celebration of the resurrection of our Lord, most would live in utter despair.
Thankfully, we remember what Jesus suffered personally this week. Shame, abuse, ridicule, beatings, and crucifixion were part of the hostility laid upon him. All this was done, not for his sake, but for ours. He struggled against sin; and in all appearances, sin seemed to best him.
Yet, we know differently. Instead of winning, sin and death were defeated by a crucified and risen Savior. He brought light into the world where darkness seemed to be triumphing. His presence, grace, and peace overcame the powers of hostility, hate, and hopelessness of this world.
That’s why the writer of Hebrews calls us to endurance, persistence, courage, and hope. Rather than losing heart and growing weary, we put our trust in the Lord who sustains the weary, overcomes the wicked, and restores hope and light.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the gift of life. Sustain us by Your presence, support us by Your Spirit, and restore us with Your hope, peace, and light. Amen.
